Tucked into the outdoor portion of your unit, the compressor is one of the most integral and costliest parts to replace. Its job is to circulate the refrigerant that carries heat away from your home, moving it through the coils of both the indoor and outdoor units and adding the energy the refrigerant needs to do its work. Interestingly, the compressor itself actually generates heat rather than cold air.

In our subtropical climate, the compressor is under near-constant stress, especially through the long summer, and like any hard-working appliance it wears down over time. Dust buildup, leaking connectors, and drops in refrigerant charge can all interrupt the cooling cycle, and a failing compressor motor can bring things to a halt entirely.

Steps to troubleshoot an AC compressor

1. Confirm the system turns on normally. Start with the simplest check of all. When you set the thermostat to cool, does the air conditioner respond and activate the way it normally would?
2. Check your circuit breaker. If nothing happens, head to your electrical panel. Make sure the breaker serving your AC is in the correct position. If the switches aren't labeled, look for any that sit differently from the others.
3. Reset the breaker. If power isn't reaching the system, flip the AC breaker fully to the off position, then back on. Try starting your air conditioner again.
4. Verify the air coming out is cold. With the system running, check the vents. Is air moving? Is it cold or just room temperature? If the air is already cold, the compressor probably isn't your problem, and something else may need service.
5. Inspect the disconnect and fuses. Most outdoor units have a fused disconnect box mounted on the wall nearby. Carefully check whether the fuses along the power relay appear to be in good condition.
6. Recover the refrigerant. Before a compressor can be removed, all refrigerant must be safely recovered by a certified technician and never vented to the air.
7. Replace the related components. Remove the receiver drier, orifice tube, and expansion valve, then flush all foreign material from the system so contaminants don't damage the new parts.
8. Install the new compressor. Fit the new compressor along with a fresh receiver drier and orifice tube, then recharge and test the system.
