Beyond the Chill: 5 Essential Steps for Sarasota Homeowners When Switching to Heat

don't get left out in the cold

Burning logs in a fireplace, flames are orange and yellow.

Sarasota and Manatee County homeowners often get a bit of a shock when that first cold front hits. Since we rely on our ACs 90% of the year, switching to "Heat" mode can feel like uncharted territory—especially when that "burning smell" kicks in!

Here are the 5 things you can do as a homeowner

1. Don't Panic Over the "First Burn" Smell

Most AC units in Florida utilize electric heat strips as a backup (Emergency Heat). Because these strips sit dormant all summer, they collect dust. When they turn on for the first time, that dust burns off, creating a distinct smell. Tell your readers to crack a window for 10 minutes; if the smell persists longer than 30, it’s time to call Aqua Plumbing & Air.

2. Test the Heat Pump Before You Need It

Sarasota nights can drop into the 40s quickly. Homeowners should switch their thermostat to "Heat" during a mild afternoon to ensure the reversing valve in the heat pump is functioning. It’s much better to find out your heat pump is struggling when it’s 65°F outside than when it’s 40°F.

3. Check and Replace Your Filters (Again)

Heating mode actually requires more consistent airflow than cooling. A clogged filter can cause the heat strips to overheat, potentially tripping a limit switch or a breaker. A fresh filter ensures the system doesn't have to "choke" to keep the living room cozy.

4. Clear the Perimeter of the Outdoor Unit

In the summer, we worry about shade. In the winter, we worry about airflow and debris. Falling leaves or overgrown summer brush can block the outdoor coil. Since the heat pump "extracts" heat from the outside air, it needs plenty of room to breathe to work efficiently.

5. Know When to Use "Emergency Heat"

Emergency Heat (EM Heat) should only be used if the main heat pump has failed. It is much more expensive to run (like a giant hair dryer for your whole house). If the "Auxiliary Heat" light comes on briefly, that's normal; if it stays on, there might be an issue. It's easy to forget about your air filter. It sits tucked away in a return vent or air handler, doing its job quietly until it can't anymore. But a clogged filter doesn't just stop filtering — it actively creates problems for your home and your HVAC system. Problem 1: Reduced Airflow Strains Your System When your filter is packed with dust and debris, air can't move through it freely. Your AC or heat pump has to work harder to pull air through, which puts stress on the blower motor and can cause the system to overheat or short-cycle. Over time, this shortens the life of your equipment and drives up your energy bills. In extreme cases, restricted airflow causes the evaporator coil to freeze over. When the ice melts, you end up with water leaking from your indoor unit — a mess that can damage ceilings, walls, and flooring. Problem 2: Poor Indoor Air Quality A filter that's too clogged to do its job means dust, pet dander, pollen, and other particles circulate freely through your home. For anyone with allergies, asthma, or respiratory issues — especially common in Florida's high-humidity environment — this can trigger symptoms and make your home uncomfortable. How often should you change your filter? In Sarasota and Bradenton homes, we recommend every 1–2 months during peak cooling season. If you have pets or anyone in the home has allergies, check it monthly. Ready to schedule service? Contact Aqua Plumbing & Air online or call 941-366-7676 .
