Repiping isn’t the first resort when plumbing problems occur in your Florida home. Most problems can be resolved by spot repairs. Like any other household component, however, plumbing systems often have a finite service life.
When rust and corrosion are systemic throughout your house and individual repairs would be so numerous that they’re no longer cost-efficient, repiping is the intelligent and most economically viable course of action. Your existing plumbing will not only be replaced with new piping, but it will also be piping that’s superior, longer-lasting and more trouble-free than the original plumbing.
How do you know if the time has come for a professional repiping of your home? Here are some good indicators:
- Age of the home. Once a house is past the 15- to 20-year mark, the process of corrosion and/or deterioration has probably reached a point where problems may be imminent. This is particularly true if the original plumbing isn’t of the highest quality. Residential plumbing installed during new construction is frequently an opportunity for cost-cutting by builders.
- Low water pressure. You may experience insufficient flow at fixtures like the shower or notice that the washing machine takes a long time to fill. This can be the result of an unknown leak, decreased flow due to internal corrosion obstructions or tree roots infiltrating pipes. Even small plumbing leaks run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and can waste enormous amounts of water—whether or not you’re aware of the leak.
- Unusual smells or odors. Chemical reactions taking place inside rusted or corroded plumbing can generate bad odors in the water. A spurt of rust-colored water when you first turn on the tap is another indication that your pipes are releasing unhealthy by-products into your drinking and bathing water. Always consult a plumber immediately if you see these indicators.
