When it gets hot in Sarasota, many of us wind up spending a fair amount of time inside our air conditioned homes, where we can stay cool and comfortable. Unfortunately, the air in our homes, while cool, can also be filled with contaminants. In fact, the air in many homes is much more polluted than the air outside. You certainly don’t want to have breathing problems in your own home. You can minimize or eliminate many of those indoor-air problems by attacking individual issues in each room. Here’s how to get started:
Do you keep chemicals such as cleaners under the sink? Many of them emit volatile organic compounds, which you shouldn’t be breathing. Replace these products with environmentally friendly cleaners and chemicals such as baking soda and ammonia. If you must use harsher chemicals, store them in a less-trafficked area.
Insects can be a problem in Florida. After you spray a pesticide, make sure the kitchen’s well ventilated. Keep all foods off the counters, and clean the counters regularly.
Make sure any combustible appliance has an exhaust fan, and it’s vented outside. An exhaust fan will remove odors, as well as vapors that can ultimately cause mold and mildew.
Living room and bedrooms
Dust and pet dander can trigger allergies. Try to keep your pets off the furniture. Dust and vacuum regularly. In addition, make sure your living room and bedrooms – as well as the rest of your home – are tobacco-free areas.
Wash your bedding in hot water, and use allergen-proof pillows and mattress covers.
Mold and mildew can be especially problematic in this part of the country, and they can be a significant health issue for those with breathing problems.Your bathrooms should have adequate exhaust fans, and they need to be vented outside. As in the kitchen, try to replace cleaning products that emit VOCs with those that are more environmentally friendly.
