Energy Efficient Heating Systems

Today, residential and commercial customers have a wide variety of options for energy efficient heating systems. Depending on whether you are in need of a furnace or a heat pump, there are different types of energy efficiency ratings to consider.

When installing a furnace in your home or business, you will need to understand a little about AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) ratings. These ratings are established by the U.S. Department of Energy for each make and model of furnace. Furnaces manufactured 20 years ago may have only had an AFUE of 50 to 60 percent. Today, you can purchase a furnace with an AFUE as high as 98.6 percent. The higher the AFUE rating, the more efficiently the furnace converts energy into heat.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are part of a split system that provides warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer. When purchasing a heat pump, you will want to find out what its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating is. The U.S. Department of Energy assigns a SEER rating for each heat pump and air conditioner sold in the U.S. Look for a SEER rating of at least 14 for the most eco-friendly results.

Chemical Coolants

If you have a heat pump built before 2010, chances are that it contains or R-22. This gas is known to cause ozone depletion and contributes to global warming and climate change. Today’s heat pumps utilize R-410a as the chemical coolant. R-410a is not associated with these problems and is a more eco-friendly choice.

The blower component of a heating system is what delivers the warm air throughout your indoor spaces. The blower motor can consume a significant amount of energy. Look for a blower motor that offers electronic commutation. This type of blower motor could save you hundreds of dollars each year as a result of reduced energy requirements.
