There’s never a convenient time for plumbing problems in the bathroom. One thing’s for sure, it’s more likely to happen when you have a crowd than not.  Many times a problem can be avoided with some preventative bathroom maintenance like the tips below.  But remember, when all else fails, you can rely on your friends at Aqua Plumbing & Air for emergency plumbing repair 24-7.

Traps: Most clogs can be prevented with the use of a simple and inexpensive sink trap. Sink traps stop hair, soap scum and other solid debris from entering the pipes. When solid debris enters the pipes, it can build up and over time, cause a complete obstruction.

Monitor Children: Monitor young children while they are using the bathroom. Children are often curious about plumbing systems and like to watch things get flushed down the sink, bathtub or toilet drains. Teach children about what should and should not go down the drain. Show children how much toilet paper to use and tell them to find help from an adult if the toilet becomes clogged. Keep tempting items such as small toys out of the bathroom.

Clean Drains Regularly: Once each month, pour a half cup of baking soda down each drain, followed by one half to one cup of white vinegar. Allow this mixture to bubble for about ten minutes then flush with hot water. This treatment is safe for pipes, does not cause noxious fumes and is not a health hazard like drain cleaning treatments found in the store. Cleaning your drains in this manner can help keep the pipes clean and free of buildup.

Clean Fixtures: Hard water buildup and the growth of bacteria can cause your plumbing fixtures to be unsafe or unhealthy and to not work as well as they should. Once each month, take the head off each fixture and soak it in a 10 percent bleach solution for 30 minutes. This rids the fixture of buildup and grime. Your fixtures could last for many years if you take the time to regularly clean and disinfect them.

Check for Leaks: Check regularly around toilet and bathtub seals for leaks. A small leak can cause thousands of dollars of damage to the flooring and walls of the bathroom. Inspect the pipes underneath the sink as well, looking for signs of moisture or condensation as well as mold, mildew or rust.
