Remove the existing filter and check the size printed on the edge or measure the dimensions of the filter compartment yourself. Be sure to measure the height, width, and depth accurately, as choosing the wrong filter size can decrease your HVAC system’s efficiency.
Next, choose a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating between 1 and 20. In general, higher MERV ratings equal greater efficiency, so skip washable filters and disposable models with MERV ratings of 8 and below. Filters with MERV ratings between 9 and 12 are optimal for residential HVAC systems, as they’re designed to remove as many airborne contaminants as possible while boosting efficiency.
Avoid filters with MERV ratings of 13 and higher, as these are designed for commercial and industrial HVAC systems. Although they’re very efficient when used properly, they don’t work with residential HVAC technology and could substantially decrease your system’s efficiency.
